We believe in God. Why? Have you realized that most every culture has some type of creation story? The Bible even describes it in more than one way, just like the rest of humanity. Each of those stories has a being who is the creator, god, mother earth, something, or someone who caused the beginning. We believe God created us in His image and intended for us to live in harmony with Him. Look around. Look at the sky, at the billions of stars. Look at the oceans teaming with life. All of this could not have “just happened”.
We believe in Jesus Christ. Why? Our God loves us even though we have not always loved Him back. We are human, and as such, make wrong choices. We have listened to God and loved Him, but when things are going good, we forget all about Him. And then, we have forgotten to show our love. We have made wrong choices.
We believe Jesus was both God and man. “And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.” John 1:10-14 NRSV
Why should we turn to Jesus? Because He is God’s only Son who came to earth to save us. God created humans to be like Him, to love Him, to obey Him. But, we failed Him. In God’s perfect love for us, He sent Jesus to be an example of living and to save us from ourselves. Jesus took all of our imperfections upon Himself so that we can still have eternal life with God.
So, what does all of this mean to us? This means that Jesus Himself has told us to go out and BE the church. Not by being self-righteous, but by being an example of good living, by showing kindness to our fellowman, by living as He did. By this, we will bring people to Jesus.
And so, why do I or you or anyone NEED church? We can do this on our own, can’t we? We NEED church because by being a part of a group of like minded individuals (just like Jesus’ disciples) we can live in a community and be strengthened by it. No one can “go it alone”. It is much easier having others to turn to in difficult times. Church can be that.
